Designing for epistemic justice: Epistemic apprenticeship as an institutional commitment

This paper develops the concept of epistemic apprenticeship as a response to failures among privileged social actors perceive knowledge bases unjustly marginalised groups sources valuable insight. Inspired by Elizabeth Spelman’s reflections on and intersectional feminism, an represents obverse form apprenticeship; one in which socially knowers become apprentices those who do not enjoy equivalent power privilege. critiques extends account focussing how institutional sedimentation dominant imaginaries works against volitional virtuous practice apprenticeship, exploring what commitment demands at level practice. As part this discussion, I scrutinise conditions under institutionalised apprenticeships may fall short their meliorative potential, obstruct rather than aid efforts achieve greater justice.
